Baked Potatoes Cooking Times

To get the best baked potato with the flaky textured skin, it is recommended to use baking-type potatoes like Russet potatoes. Avoid potatoes with bruised skin, sprout growths or spots which are discolored as you would be consuming them along with the skin. It is better to chose potatoes which have uniform brown toned skin.

While cooking medium sized potatoes of about 150 grams each on a regular or conventional oven, it would take about 45 minutes at 400°F or one hour at 350°F or one and a half hour at 325°F. In the case of convection ovens, decrease the temperature by 25°F and cook for the same duration as regular oven.

For cooking the potatoes evenly in an oven, it is better to choose same sized potatoes as all of them would get done at the same cooking time. You should also scrub and rinse each potato individually under running water and dry them before baking in the oven.

Ensure that you pierce the four sides of the potatoes so that steam can escape; otherwise there is risk of explosion during the baking process.

Do not wrap the potato in aluminum foil as it would cause steaming and result in soft skin since the foil would retain the moisture.

Test whether the potatoes are done by piercing with a fork. If the inside becomes tender and reaches temperature of about 210°, then you can remove the baked potatoes from the oven. The cooking is perfect is the crisp golden skinned potato is fluffy at the inside.
