Cooking Time For Hamburgers
Cooking time for hamburger varies by thickness of the meat and not its weight. Also, it has to be cooked evenly by dividing the total time into half for each of the sides. Preheat frying pan to 350°F. For the hamburger to reach 160°F at it center, it would take 10 minutes for each side for a thickness of 1 inch. For 1/2 inch thick hamburger, it would take 3 minutes per side and for 3/4 inch it would take 6 minutes of cooking on each side. |
The basic rule for cooking hamburger is that the inside should not look red in color though color may not be the best indicator in deciding whether the hamburger is cooked or not. Many a times, though the hamburger may look brown at the outside, the inside may not have reached the safe cooking temperature. In addition, some of the hamburgers varieties may be fully cooked but may look pink at the inside too.
Hence, it is important to check the inside temperature of the hamburger using a meat thermometer before taking it out of the oven. The meat thermometer should be poked until the inside by choosing the thickest part of the meat. You can also reach the centre by poking the thermometer from the sides. The meat thermometer records the temperature in about 15 seconds. It is also important to immediately wash the thermometer after every use.
It is very important that the hamburger reaches the safe cooking temperature in the inside as the meat may contain harmful bacteria which may affect humans by causing various serious food borne bacterial infections.
