How Many Minutes Per Pound For Roasting Chicken ?

In order to prepare roasted chicken, you need to first preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. The time needed to roast a chicken varies with the thickness of the meat. A large chicken could even take about 2 hours to fully get roasted.

The general thumb rule for preparing roast chicken is a cooking time of about 20 minutes for every pound of meat and another 10 to 20 minutes at a temperature of 350 degrees F in the oven. Hence, if you want to prepare a chicken roast to serve 4 – 5 people, you would require about 5 lb meat and a total cooking time of 1 hour 50 minutes.

Some people, however, prefer to roast the chicken on high heat of about 450 degrees F for the first and last 15 minutes (a total time of half an hour). The rest of the cooking time is at a temperature of 350 degrees F in the oven. The chicken roast would have brown and crispy skin and the meat would be delicious to taste if proper seasoning is done.

Before roasting the chicken, you need to grease the outer skin thoroughly with olive oil or butter so that the meat does not dry out. The fat that drains out of the meat should drip away from the meat and hence, you can use a rack inside the oven. You can generously season the meat with pepper and salt to enhance the flavor. The other common seasonings are herbs like sage, rosemary, tarragon and thyme.

The chicken is done if the internal temperature of the meat reads 180 degrees F.
