How Long Should You Steam Shrimp ?

Shrimps are classic servings in parties. They can be served cold or hot, but are mostly commonly served with cocktail sauce. This Japanese dish if seasoned right, can be ready in just 15 minutes, and it is one of the simplest dishes to make in an emergency where you can add them in salads or mix them up in a cocktail sauce.

The ingredients required for making shrimps are 1 pound of shrimps, 1/2 cup of water, 1/2 cup of vinegar and 4 teaspoons of bay leave. There are easy steps to make steamed shrimps. First of all pour the water and vinegar into a saucepan along with the 4 teaspoons of old bay seasoning. Start boiling the mixture and keep the shrimps on ice until the mixture starts boiling. Introduce the shrimps into the saucepan and stir the mixture. Now close the lid of the pan and let it steam. Now comes the tough part of steaming the shrimps for right duration to be ideally cooked rather than being overcooked.

In order to avoid overcooking the shrimps, make sure you steam them for approximately 5 minutes. Steaming shrimps for longer duration is required only when the amount of shrimps is large. Another way to ensure the tenderness of the shrimps is to check on their color. When the shrimps turn from grey to pink, it indicates that the shrimps are very well cooked.

So, there you have your perfect party cocktail serving ready in less than 10 minutes, and remember the key is not to steam shrimps for longer duration, but letting them steam for a short while until they are tender, succulent and perfectly cooked.
