Method For Steaming Broccoli

Broccoli is considered as one of the most nutritive and delicious vegetables. It is highly recommended for vitamin C, and it is also believed that broccoli helps in preventing cancer depending on the way it is cooked.

If broccoli is not cooked in a right manner, it may get overcooked and lose most of its nutrients in the process.

There are primarily two ways of steaming broccoli. First is the stove top oven method and the other one using the microwave oven. Steaming broccoli in a microwave oven is not recommended as it is believed stove top oven preserves more of the nutrition than the microwave oven.

To start cooking, peel off the thick skin from the stem and cut the stalks. Chop the broccoli into small collection of bushes. Fill saucepan with 3/4 to 1 inch of water and bring the water to boil. Add the chopped broccoli to the boiling water. Cover the saucepan with a lid. Reduce the heat to medium, and steam the broccoli for about 4-6 minutes. Then check whether you can pierce the broccoli florets easily or not. As soon as the broccoli is tender and you are able to pierce the florets, remove the pan from heat as there is the risk of overcooking.

Steaming broccoli in a microwave oven is the same as in saucepan. The only thing that is different is the duration of steaming. In a microwave, the steaming process is faster.

Some of the ways of checking the doneness of broccoli is it turns bright green in color and tastes quite delicious. Broccoli, being very versatile nutritionally, can be dressed in a number of ways for better taste. You can serve it with lemon, butter, salt and pepper. So importance of broccoli lies mostly in the way of its cooking. The better it is cooked, the better it will taste and the better nutrition it will provide.
