Salmonella bacteria is a name given to a cluster of closely related 2,000 bacteria that resides in the intestinal tracts of human, other animals and even in birds. Human gets infected with this type of bacteria through consumption of food that is contaminated with these bacteria.

Mainly food items that originate from animal such as poultry, milk and beef are chief sources of these bacteria. Sometimes handling of reptiles and few pets can also transmit these bacteria to the people who come in contact with them. These bacteria remain alive in the feces of an infected person for about a week. So, poor hygiene and sanitation may further spread the disease to others. Salmonella is a debilitating disease. It causes stomach ache, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Although not life-threatening, salmonella should be treated. If left untreated, it can lead to complications.

There are several steps in salmonella treatment based on the severity of the condition. Some of the salmonella treatment steps are highlighted below.

1. Always request take a medical practitioner’s advice before starting any medicine. Antibiotica like ampicilin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, sulphonamides, tetracycline is recommended.
